Streetlights consume enormous amount of energy and incur repetitive maintenance costs throughout if not properly maintained. They require frequent human monitoring and thorough infrastructure reassurance by Municipal Corporations

Conventional Operation of Street Lights:

Majority of Cities/ Towns use the old fashioned Timers or Photo Cells or even Manual Switching ON/OFF a group of Street Lights based on Seasonal Timings

Challenges with Conventional Operation of Street Lights:

  • Prevention of Energy Wastage :
    • The source of energy to Street Lights is from Distribution Transformer which is unregulated causing the excessive input Voltage during off-peak hours draws more Current which results in the excessive Energy Consumption leading to Light Pollution.
    • The Switching ON/OFF of Street Lights are based on Seasonal Timings which are updated on monthly or seasonal basis where as the Timings of natural light varies on daily basis.
    • The Timers are Standalone equipments and are prone to Resets which cause the Day Glowing of Lamps.
    • The Photo Cells without frequent Cleaning results in malfunction causes the Days Glowing of Lamps.
    • Identifying the degraded Capacitors in Lamps and replacing them in time.

  • Prevention in Excessive Maintenance Costs:
    • The excessive input Voltage during the off-peak hours to Street Lights damages the lamps, leading to replacements.
    • Because of excessive input Voltage during off-peak hours, lights draw more current leading to heating of cables, fuse outs and sum times short circuiting.

  • Maintaining the maximum Glowing Percentage of Lamps :
    • It is very difficult and tedious with stand alone equipments to identify Faults like Non-Glowing of Lamps in entire City or Town and register complaints, Tracking Complaints, Tracking Rectification of Complaints and  conduct the Audit on Glowing Percentage of Lamps.
 

Scope for Savings and improving overall efficiency of Street Lighting System:

Energy Bills:

  • Burn Hour Optimization: Switching ON/OFF of Street Lights based on Morning/ Evening Civil Twilight instead of Seasonal Timings /Fixed Timings can achieve in reduction of 20 Minutes burning time every day.
  • Voltage Stabilization as Per Traffic Conditions: During night times the Voltage to Lamps shoots up to 280 V instead of 230 V causing excessive Energy Consumption. If the Voltage is regulated between 180 V (Off-Peak Hours: 10 pm -5am) to 230 V (Peak Hours: 6pm-10pm & 5am-6am) as per traffic conditions results in reduction of overall Energy Consumption by more than 40%.
  • Detecting and replacing capacitors as and when they are damaged or when their efficiency is reduced.

Maintenance Costs:

  • Maintaining the proper load at Feeder Box/ Control Cabinet reduces the overheating which results in the burning of Cables.
  • Maintaining the Stable Voltage to lamps increases the lamps life.
  • Safe guarding the equipments of Feeder Box.

  • Quickly identifying the faults by maintenance Team and Carrying out the necessary repairs.
